Frequently Asked Questions
What is Donegal tweed?
Donegal tweed is a hand-woven wool cloth from Ireland's north-west, named for the county of Donegal where it has been woven for several centuries. The fleck gives Donegal tweed its signature: small knots of coloured yarn woven into the base in moss greens, heather purples, slate blues and ochres against a muted grey, brown or oatmeal base. Donegal is softer and lighter than many other tweeds, so a Donegal tweed jacket wears comfortably indoors as well as out. Our Donegal tweed jackets include fitted blazers, longer coats and classic three-quarter styles.
Is a tweed jacket the same as a blazer or sports jacket?
They overlap, but each has its own use. A tweed jacket describes any jacket cut from tweed cloth, including blazers and sports jackets. A blazer has a smarter, more fitted shape, cut tighter at the waist and designed to pair with trousers like a suit jacket. A sports jacket, sometimes called a country jacket, is looser than a blazer, usually with patch pockets, and designed for layered casual wear or a weekend outing. For most occasions, a mid-weight tweed sports jacket in a muted colour gives you the widest wardrobe range.
How warm is a Donegal tweed jacket?
Donegal tweed is a warm fabric for winter thanks to its dense weave that adds insulation on top of the heat-trapping wool fibres. Though not as warm as a heavier wool coat or a lined wax jacket, a tweed jacket with a decent lining will handle most autumn and winter days. Tweed also breathes well, so you won’t overheat indoors or when the sun comes out. As winter grows sharper, layering a jumper underneath can keep the cold at bay, but you may want to step up to a full-length tweed coat or wax jacket for the coldest days.
How do I care for a tweed jacket?
Most tweed jackets and coats are dry clean only. The lining, the structured shoulder and the drape of a tweed piece don’t take well to home washing, which can shrink the wool and warp the shape. Between dry cleans, brush your jacket with a soft clothes brush after each wear and hang it on a wide hanger (not a thin wire one, which marks the shoulder) to air before storing. Avoid folding, which creases the collar and lapels. Check the care label for precise instructions for your jacket.
