Tweed flat caps have never gone out of fashion. While many have known their value, more and more people are realising the cap's potential in making a fashion statement. The recent rise of the flat cap could be attributed to popular culture in particular the broody and moody and amazing Peaky Blinders.

This TV show has achieved almost cult like following not just for its’ marvellous cast and wicked story line but for the styling and design of its players – adorned in post war tweed, and most notably caps. The flat cap is a not only a style statement but a weapon of choice for this unique gangster brotherhood.

And it seems we again are in love with the flat cap look of this family epic. In the UK, John Lewis, a chain of high-end department stores reported a rise in flat cap sales by 27% after the first episode of Peaky Blinders was aired in 2016. Two weeks later they were up an impressive 83%.

In Ireland, the tweed flat cap largely waned from daily wear among younger generations and popular wear from the 60s onwards, although it was worn by many of its hero’s including Bob Dylan; well it is now back with a bang.

Celebrities such as Brad Pitt and David Beckham often dress in their tweed flat caps. Irish film stars Jamie Dornan and Daniel Day Lewis also wear them effortlessly and elegantly.

So what is it about a tweed flat cap, long before the Shelby-chic, this cap was worn daily by most Irish men. Irish weavers and woollen mills are delighted with the renaissance in the flat cap. Designers and makers such as Mucros Weavers and John Hanley are at the top of their game with their flat cap collections. These talented Irish weavers and makers match their craftsmanship to Irish tweed resulting in wonderful Irish caps for the home and international wearer.

Tweed flat caps are timeless and sophisticated, and as the Shelby brothers have proven remarkably masculine. Flat caps are the typically caps for men, although women can wear them well – similar to the boyfriend shirt trends.

With its distinctive silhouette flat caps offer a sleek combination of a classic simple design and good looks. Flat caps have a low crown and rounded shape, matched with its’ small, stiff brim make these hats classic and a current hot fashion statement.
