Mucross Weavers Irish Caps and Hats for Men

At Weavers of Ireland, our range of Mucross Weavers caps and hats pulls together the very best of Irish craftsmanship and gives you an extensive choice of headwear for every occasion. We specialise in traditional Irish caps and hats, including the Flat cap, also known as the Scally cap, the Driving cap, the Panel cap, the Waxed cap and the Pub cap. These are all similar in style and are sometimes mistaken for one another, but each has a distinctive shape and is made in a slightly different way.

Flat caps, or Scally caps, have been a staple for Irish men and boys since the 1500s, when a law was passed to make it mandatory for males over the age of seven to wear hats on Sunday and holidays. This law was intended to support the local wool trade, and was successful in doing this, and it also had the effect that the flat cap became an essential part of the working class male’s wardrobe and this lasted a lot longer than the original law.

Many centuries later, the flat cap was adopted by the upper classes as a good, practical choice for shooting and walking, and today it is seen all over the world as a stylish accessory for men and for women. This is an impressive rise to stardom, and the flat cap is now heralded as a favourite by many celebrities and style icons. Top film and music stars such as Madonna and Justin Timberlake are often spotted wearing an Irish cap, and it seems that they share our views that the combination of style and practicality is unbeatable!

Our Mucross Weaver's Irish caps and hats are available in a wide range of colours, many of which are inspired by the gorgeous Irish landscape. Our expert weavers create the most beautiful wool Tweed and most of our hats and caps are constructed by hand from this top quality fabric. We have a selection of hats that are designed for men and for women, and most of our designs are unisex. We even have waxed cap designs to keep you warm and dry, whatever the weather.
