Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a tweed blazer and a tweed jacket?
Blazer and jacket overlap, and the words are often used interchangeably, but there's a useful distinction when you're picking one. A tweed blazer is the more fitted, tailored shape, cut on a defined waist with structured shoulders, usually single-breasted, and designed to pair with trousers, a dress or a skirt. A tweed jacket is the broader term, covering the blazer but also looser country cuts, longer lengths and casual pieces like the gilet. For a formal event, pick a blazer; for walking, workwear and everyday wear, a jacket gives you more versatility.
Will a tweed jacket keep the rain out?
Tweed is naturally water-resistant: the lanolin in wool fibres causes rain to bead and roll off, and the tight weave helps shed water rather than soak it up. For a passing shower, your tweed jacket will cope well and dry quickly away from direct heat. For sustained rain, tweed isn't the right layer: look for a jacket with waterproof seams and a longer cut, built for proper weather. You can also extend a traditional tweed's water resistance by treating it with a wool-safe reproofer every year or two.
When can I wear a tweed jacket?
Most tweed jackets suit autumn, winter and spring, but lighter-weight tweeds work in summer too, especially mornings and evenings. Tweed jackets are also well suited to a formal outfit: a wedding guest look, a smart office or any dress occasion that calls for tailored outerwear. For casual wear, a looser country-cut tweed sits well with jeans or trousers for a weekend lunch or a country walk. The weight of the piece guides the season, while the cut guides the occasion.
How do I care for a tweed jacket?
Most tweed jackets and coats are dry clean only. The lining, the structured shoulder and the drape of a tweed piece don’t take well to home washing, which can shrink the wool and warp the shape. Between dry cleans, brush your jacket with a soft clothes brush after each wear and hang it on a wide hanger (not a thin wire one, which marks the shoulder) to air before storing. Avoid folding, which creases the collar and lapels. Check the care label for precise instructions for your jacket.
